Blood Sugar Balance & Mindful Eating

by | Jun 7, 2016

If you’re like most people, you’ve got a busy life. Meetings, travel, kids, work, exercise, cooking, home repairs, family – to name just a few things. So! We need to feel our best in order to fit it all in.

How do we do this? Well, as I wrote in this blog post, one of the most important things we can do for our health is to keep our blood sugar balanced.

Healthy blood sugar regulation is the foundation for a good quality of life. It helps us lose unwanted weight, gain energy naturally, and heal our body where it needs healing.

As we go through our daily routine, the last thing we need is to be on a roller coaster – a blood sugar roller coaster.

So here is another tip to keep your blood sugar balanced so that you can stay focused and boost your energy to get it all done!

Tip #2: Eat Mindfully

My second tip to keep your blood sugar balanced has to do with mindful eating.

Why mindful eating?

Good question!

With our busy lives, we tend to eat for convenience rather than for nutrition. We eat fast because we need to hurry up to the next THING.

So instead of eating for long-term health benefits, we are tempted by taste-bud-pleasing, instant gratification. I mean we have NO time, right? So we HAVE to eat something that really WAKES UP our taste buds FAST!

So sometimes, we go for foods with too much sugar, salt, or fat. We eat them too fast to even really enjoy them.

But even healthy foods eaten too quickly are harmful, too.

So let me ask you, what if I could easily teach you a new way of eating where you get to truly experience the tastes and textures of your food rather than scarfing it all down?

Guess what?

You CAN learn to slow down and eat mindfully.

You CAN view the food you eat as medicine that not only nourishes your body, but also tastes delicious!

Let me show you how.

What is mindful eating?

Mindful eating means taking the time to honor your body by first choosing high quality food. Food that truly nourishes you from the inside out.

Then, eating mindfully means you prepare that food with care and attention.

Finally, mindful eating means you eat your food slowly while using all your senses to really enjoy the flavors, smells, and texture.

It’s important to allocate distraction-free time so that you can prepare your food and appreciate the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients it contains.

When we eat in a rushed manner or multitask while eating, we’re creating a state of stress when actually we need to prepare our body for digestion by slowing down.

Mindful eating is a way of saying to yourself “I respect my body enough to be mindful of what I put into it and of the way I eat.”

This way of eating is kind of like meditation. We are choosing to be present not only with ourselves but also our food.

Here are some of the benefits of eating mindfully:

  • Improved digestion
  • Experience less gas and bloating
  • Regular bowel movements
  • Uncover hidden food sensitivitie
  • Sense intuitively when you are full
  • Be satisfied with less food
  • Develop a healthier relationship with food
  • See food as medicine
  • Discover new tastes and textures
  • Create healthy habits that enliven you

When is the right time to learn to eat mindfully?

Another great question!

If you agree with any of the following statements, then it’s probably time for you to practice mindful eating.

  • I gain weight easily, especially around my belly.
  • I crave sugar and starchy foods.
  • I need a nap after I eat.
  • I get bloated after eating.
  • I scarf down my food and forget what I ate not long after.
  • I eat just to feel full and don’t really enjoy the taste.
  • I eat to numb out my feelings.
  • I want to learn to enjoy healthy foods.
  • I have difficulty focusing and have a foggy brain.
  • I suspect I have food sensitivities.
  • I am addicted to eating unhealthy foods.

What to do next

In my nutrition practice, I help clients discover what triggers them to overeat, binge, or numb out with food. I lead them through a step-by-step process to learn how to eat mindfully and to learn what to eat for their unique body type.
